POP SOUL SINGER/SONGWRITER Samantha Paige Lucas immediately lured us in with her flute-like vocals and sultry vibe. Her single track "Wish You Were Mine" is a slow groove beat that showcases her unique tone and lyrics straight out of a lovesick diary. With a passion for music and performing on stage, S.P.L introduces a sexier, darker sound to hip hop beats and R&B soul songwriting.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Hey hey! Well my name is Samantha Paige Lucas aka S.P.L (high school nickname). I’m an R&B artist with a pop edge! I submitted to this magazine because I love the element of bringing all forms of art together. I’m big on personal style and fashion and I like to sketch in my spare time.
MUSICAL BACKGROUND: Music has been a part of me since I was a baby. I grew up in primary school and high school being a part of choirs and then an A cappella group called Barbershop. I did a short DJ course at school also and then got into my later years of school where I got into a band with my close friends. That was more alternative rock. Then I expanded to a new band and we created Winters Calling, which was a grunge punk band. After a while we went our separate ways and I got into an acoustic trio called Summer Avenue with two of my besties, and then eventually I decided to go solo and create what is now my signature sound. I’ve been songwriting for every band I’ve been in and being a part of a team, so it’s a completely different ride now that I’m writing for just myself.

INSPIRATION: Music is a part of my soul. I love the idea of being taken away to another place where your body reacts to sound and the lyrics make you feel like you’re not crazy or alone. I’m a pretty emotional and deep being so anything poetic speaks to my soul.

SIGNATURE SOUND: My sound changes all the time but I’d have to say for now I’m definitely inspired by the early 2000's R&B. I grew up listening to all types of genres, and in particular R&B spoke to me and the sound I was going for. My mixtape The Ex Files is a prime example of that. I’m now in the process of releasing more upbeat Afrobeat style pop tracks, with a splash of Latino. I’m constantly chopping and changing my sound depending on my mood.
ON SONGWRITING: I write a lot about my relationships with people. I’ve had plenty of bad experiences and also very deep experiences in love and also in family and friendships, so I really like to discuss situations that have occurred in my life and also the way I feel. I think “Signs” will always be a favourite of mine. I remember recording it and I was already in an emotional place, and I found out more news and I decided to use that raw emotion and sing. I love authenticity and this one always gets me in my feelings. Having said that, all my songs are my babies because they are a window into my soul, and almost like a private diary. Going out and experiencing life is where I get my inspiration. I’m constantly getting myself into situations (not on purpose), but I can be quite impulsive and that usually leads to a story worth telling. I wouldn’t say I have a process; it changes all the time. I’m either singing in the shower with my phone on record, singing out random things in my head or I write it as poetry or a letter. Sometimes I hear a beat and sing over it. It’s really different all the time.
FAVORITE MUSICAL ERA: I love many eras of music, I can’t choose one! I love the 80's for glam rock, 70's for disco, early 90's for hip hop, late 90's for pop and early 2000's for the R&B.
ON PERFORMING: Performing gives you this weird electricity and adrenaline rush. You get nervous before you get on, and then you start singing, the music starts and you connect. I often feel like I’m not heard when I speak, so when I get to perform it’s almost like a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders and I can breathe. It’s a huge outlet and it makes me feel special and loved. It’s so much fun!

FASHION: I wouldn’t say there’s a special performance art. I just like to have a chat and do a bit of stand-up comedy and converse with the audience in between songs. Keep it real and see where the night takes us. If we were to talk fashion I’ve definetly got a certain style. I’m majorly influenced by Elizabeth Taylor’s sense of style. It’s not just a look, it’s also an attitude.
OVERCOMING OBSTACLES: I’m a huge perfectionist and that can cause me to not want to release anything for a long time until it’s just right. When I was younger I tried out for The X Factor twice and I was rejected, but I am so happy I didn’t get it. At first I was devastated but I wasn’t confident on stage or with myself back then. It was a huge lesson and I wasn’t ready. Having said that, I’m not really into applying for those shows anymore. I’m a songwriter and I like having creative control. Of course it’s great for exposure but it’s just not really my cup of tea. I grew up and used my gut instincts as my guide.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: One of the best moments in my journey so far had to be performing at the Optus Stadium in my home town of Perth Western Australia. It's the stadium we have all of our AFL football games at and also concerts from the likes of Queen, Ed Sheehan and Eminem. I was fortunate enough to perform at 1/4 time for our AFL home game. It was a surreal experience and it just pushed me to keep pursuing this dream.
FUTURE HOPES + DREAMS: My hopes and dreams are to perform bigger shows and hopefully tour internationally. I don’t really have limits when it comes to music I just want to put myself out there and see what the cosmos brings my way. I’m ready! DM
